In the fast-changing and challenging times that we live in today, being innovative and ready to change is the only way to succeed. The emirate of Dubai has proven this time and again. However, just when the world starts to wonder, “What next?” the city comes up with another jaw-dropping development.
It is true that Dubai’s transformation never fails to amaze. The step-by-step march of the city towards creating an ideal future is a reflection of the grit and determination that the leaders and the people of the city exhibit in their day-to-day lives.
In another inspiring move, the “next” for the emirate is to become a 20-minute city.
Last month, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the second phase of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. As per the plan, the emirate is headed towards becoming a 20-minute city, which means that the residents can reach their destinations within a 20-minute period, either on foot or by bicycle.
According to reports from the Dubai Media Office, the project involves developing integrated service centers with all the necessary facilities and increasing the population density around mass transit stations, allowing residents access to 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations within 20 minutes.
Phase II of the plan consists of several projects under ten key initiatives, including enhancing urban centers, Dubai real estate strategy, urban farming plan, preserving urban heritage plan, developing the 20-minute city policy, and the pedestrian network master plan.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid was quoted as saying, “Today, we have a clear vision for the development of Dubai’s urban infrastructure and housing sector until 2040. Our goal is for Dubai to be an eco- and pedestrian-friendly city, and a city with a high yield from urban agriculture.”
It is worth noting that the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approved in March 2021, intends to make Dubai the best city in the world to live in. As a result, the city’s urban infrastructure is being constantly and strategically modernized.
The ambition to make Dubai a 20-minute city is exemplary. How this plan takes shape and what it means for the people of Dubai will be a journey worth mapping—an inspiring one indeed.
